Pankrat Kravchuk, a cantankerous Ukrainian janitor, has died. At his funeral a spore from the Old Country imprints with his being and grows into a tiny new Pankrat. He takes advantage of his resurrection to resume his lifelong spat with the hapless Yuri Rudenko. As the conflict grows, so does Pankrat, from imp to full-sized man, and beyond. Along the way he is adopted as a pet by a senile old woman, battles roosters, pigs and dogs, and gets a second chance at romance with the leggy Luba, all the while escaping an inept monster hunt led by Yuri.
